Story

A woman leans her weight onto an iron in front of a bright window. The light comes from behind her, so her body looks like a dark shadow. The French painter Edgar Degas made this picture in 1873. It is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

In 19th-century Paris, there were many laundries where clothes were washed and ironed, and many women worked long hours there. Just as with dancers, Degas was fascinated by their skilled, repeated movements, and he painted them many times. The white window light and the cloth hanging above are painted with quick, loose strokes.

The singer and collector Jean-Baptiste Faure bought the painting but returned it so that Degas could rework it. Degas then kept it and lent it to the 1876 show we now call the second Impressionist exhibition. Later it belonged to the American collectors Mr. and Mrs. Havemeyer, and it was bequeathed to the Met in 1929.

A woman irons clothes. A bright window is behind her. So her body looks dark. Degas liked to watch women at work. He painted them many times.

Look Closer

A face in shadow

Her face, looking down, is almost hidden by the backlight. The work itself is the main subject, not her expression.

The bright window

Strong light comes in through the window on the left and makes the outline of her body stand out.

Hanging laundry

Washed cloth hangs above her. It is painted with just a few quick strokes.

Hands on the iron

She presses the iron with both hands to smooth out the white cloth.
