It's called 'The Railway,' but there's no train! Only white steam.
In front of a black iron fence, a woman holding a book looks up at us, while a little girl grips the bars and looks through them. Beyond the fence are the tracks leading to the Gare Saint-Lazare station in Paris. The French painter Édouard Manet made this picture in 1873. Today it is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
The woman is Victorine Meurent, also known as the model for Manet's famous 'Olympia.' This was the last time Manet painted her. The girl is believed to be the daughter of the painter Alphonse Hirsch, whose garden Manet used for the picture. No train is shown. The railway appears only as a cloud of white steam. In the background, you can see a building on the Rue de Saint-Pétersbourg, where Manet had rented a studio since 1872.
When it was shown at the Salon of 1874, critics found it confusing and sketchy, and cartoonists made fun of it. But it captures the railway, a symbol of the new age, and a moment when time seems to stop. Later it came to be praised as a key picture of modern life.
A woman and a girl are by a black fence. The woman looks at us. The girl looks through the fence at the railway. But we cannot see a train! We can only see white steam.
The model, Victorine Meurent, was Manet's favorite. She also appears in 'Luncheon on the Grass' and 'Olympia.' This is the last painting Manet made of her. Later, she became a painter herself.
Some say the puppy asleep on the woman's lap recalls the dog in Titian's famous 'Venus of Urbino.' Manet had already used that painting as a model for his 'Olympia.'
In 1881, the dealer Paul Durand-Ruel bought this painting for 5,400 francs. In 1898, the American businessman Henry Havemeyer bought it for 100,000 francs. After Manet died, his fame grew very quickly.
1874 was the year Monet and his friends held the first Impressionist exhibition. Manet was invited, but he did not join. He sent this painting to the official Salon instead, because he wanted to win success there.
