パリの裕福な家に生まれました。ルネサンスやスペインの名画を研究しながら、平たく大胆な色と筆づかいで「今のパリ」を描き、伝統を重んじる人々から何度も批判を受けます。若い印象派の画家たちから兄貴分としてしたわれましたが、本人は印象派展には一度も出品せず、公式展覧会サロンで認められることをめざしつづけました。
Manet was born into a wealthy family in Paris. He studied the great masters of the Renaissance and Spain, but painted modern Paris with flat, bold colors and brushwork. Traditional critics attacked him again and again. The young Impressionists looked up to him like an older brother, but he never showed at an Impressionist exhibition. He kept trying to win success at the official Salon.
