Story黒い帽子に黒い服。大きな目でこちらを見つめる女性は、印象派の画家ベルト・モリゾです。描いたのはフランスの画家エドゥアール・マネ。1872年の作品で、右上には「Manet 72」のサインがあります。今はパリのオルセー美術館にあります。
A woman in a black hat and black clothes looks at us with large eyes. She is the Impressionist painter Berthe Morisot. The French painter Édouard Manet made this portrait in 1872, and his signature, 'Manet 72,' is in the upper right. Today it is in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
モリゾは名作『バルコニー』をはじめ、マネの絵に何度もモデルとして登場しました。この絵では、光が片側からだけ当たり、顔の半分が深いかげに沈んでいます。黒い服の中に、胸もとのすみれの青と、白いえりもとがほんの少しだけ光る、「黒の研究」ともいえる一枚です。
Morisot appeared as a model in many of Manet's paintings, including the famous 'The Balcony.' In this portrait, light comes from one side only, and half of her face sinks into deep shadow. Against all this black, only the blue violets and the white at her neck catch a little light. It is almost a study in black.
絵はマネから批評家デュレの手にわたりましたが、1894年、モリゾ自身がオークションでこの絵を買いました。その後は娘ジュリー、孫へと受けつがれ、1998年にオルセー美術館に入ります。詩人ポール・ヴァレリーは、マネの作品の中でこれ以上のものはないとたたえました。
The painting went from Manet to the critic Théodore Duret. In 1894, Morisot herself bought it at an auction. It then passed to her daughter Julie and to her grandson, and it entered the Musée d'Orsay in 1998. The poet Paul Valéry praised it, saying he ranked no other Manet work above it.

Morisot's eyes are said to have been green. But in this painting, Manet made them black. Some think he wanted her to look a little Spanish. It was a bold choice that matches her black clothes and hat.
1894年、批評家デュレのコレクションが売りに出されたとき、モリゾはこの絵を5100フランで落札しました。マネが亡くなって10年以上。自分を描いてくれた肖像が、こうしてモリゾ自身のものになったのです。
In 1894, when the critic Duret sold his collection, Morisot bought this painting for 5,100 francs. Manet had been dead for more than ten years. The portrait he had painted of her became her own.
フランスの詩人ポール・ヴァレリーは1932年、マネの作品の中でこの肖像の上に置けるものはないと書き、フェルメールの名画にもたとえました。ヴァレリーの妻はモリゾのめいで、彼にとっては親せきの肖像でもありました。
In 1932, the French poet Paul Valéry wrote that he placed no other Manet work above this portrait, and he even compared it to Vermeer. Valéry's wife was Morisot's niece, so it was also a portrait of a relative.
1998年にオルセー美術館がこの絵を手に入れたとき、国の基金などに加えて、日本経済新聞社が中心となった協賛の呼びかけも資金を支えました。日本ともちょっとした縁のある一枚なのです。
When the Musée d'Orsay acquired this painting in 1998, the money came from French funds and also from a sponsorship program organized by the Japanese newspaper Nikkei. So this portrait has a small link to Japan.
