A concert with no musicians!? Manet slipped in his friends and himself.
Under the trees of the Tuileries Gardens in Paris, fashionable people gather together. They are at one of the twice-weekly outdoor concerts held there. The French painter Édouard Manet made this picture in 1862. It is owned jointly by the National Gallery in London and the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin.
The title says 'music,' but there are no musicians in the picture. Instead, the painting focuses on the fashionable people of modern Paris. In the crowd are real people: Manet himself on the far left, the poet Charles Baudelaire, the painter Henri Fantin-Latour, the composer Jacques Offenbach and Manet's brother Eugène. Even the iron chairs in front were brand-new in the park that year.
When it was shown in 1863, critics said the rough brushwork looked unfinished. The writer Émile Zola later wrote that one angry visitor even threatened violence if the painting stayed on display. But this idea of painting modern city life, here and now, had a big influence on young painters like Monet and Renoir. It became one of the starting points of Impressionism.
Many people meet in a park. They listen to music under the trees. But we cannot see the musicians! Manet painted his friends here. He painted himself, too.
The composer Jacques Offenbach is in the crowd. He wrote the famous galop from 'Orpheus in the Underworld,' a tune played at school sports days in Japan. He is said to be the man with glasses and a mustache sitting by a tree on the right.
The bearded man on the far left, only half in the picture, is said to be Manet himself. He did not make himself the star. He quietly placed himself at the edge, as one of the crowd. Next to him stands his friend, the painter Albert de Balleroy.
The collector Hugh Lane, who owned this painting, died in 1915 when the ship Lusitania sank. A note he added to his will was not legally accepted, so London and Dublin argued over it for years. Today the two galleries share it.
Several people in the painting were big fans of the composer Richard Wagner. So some experts imagine that Wagner's music was being played that day. But there is no clear proof.
