Once called 'Victorian junk,' now loved around the world!
On a terrace above the Mediterranean Sea, a woman in a thin orange robe is curled up and fast asleep. The English painter Frederic Leighton made this picture in 1895, near the end of his life. Today it belongs to the Museo de Arte de Ponce in Puerto Rico, in the Caribbean.
This sleeping pose was first planned as a carving on a marble bath in another painting. Leighton liked the pose so much that he made it into a painting of its own. Some experts say it looks like Michelangelo's statue 'Night.' The oleander in the upper right is a poisonous plant. It may suggest how close sleep and death can be.
The magazine The Graphic bought the painting first and gave away prints of it at Christmas in 1895. But in the 20th century, this kind of painting went out of fashion, and for a time no one knew where it was. In 1963, Luis A. Ferré, the founder of the Museo de Arte de Ponce, bought it for a low price. Today museums all over the world ask to borrow it.

The composer Andrew Lloyd Webber says that as a young man he saw this painting for sale in a London shop for 50 pounds. When he asked his grandmother to lend him the money, she said no: 'I will not have Victorian junk in my flat.'
In January 1896, Leighton became the first painter to be made a lord, a baron. But he died the very next day. His title is known as the shortest-lived peerage in British history.
When Leighton died, this painting was on display in the window of The Graphic magazine's office. It is said that his funeral procession passed right by that window.
In 2015, a chalk study of the model's head for this painting was found on a bedroom door in an English country house. A sketch for a famous painting had been hiding in a surprising place.
