イングランド北部の海辺の町スカーバラに生まれ、家族とヨーロッパ各地をめぐりながら、ドイツやイタリアで絵を学びました。古代ギリシャ・ローマの世界や神話を題材に、なめらかで気品のある絵を描き、彫刻も手がけます。1878年から亡くなるまでロイヤル・アカデミーの会長をつとめ、ヴィクトリア朝のイギリス美術界をリードしました。
Leighton was born in Scarborough, a seaside town in northern England. He traveled around Europe with his family and studied art in Germany and Italy. He painted the world of ancient Greece and Rome and scenes from myths in a smooth, elegant style, and he also made sculpture. From 1878 until his death he was President of the Royal Academy, leading British art in the Victorian age.
