A flood of rose petals from the ceiling! Were real petals sent from France every week?

Story

Pink rose petals pour down like a waterfall from the ceiling of a banquet hall, and the guests are buried in them. Behind the table, the emperor in a golden robe and his friends watch the scene. The painter was Lawrence Alma-Tadema, who was born in the Netherlands and worked in Britain. He made this picture in 1888, and it is now in a private collection.

Heliogabalus, also called Elagabalus, was a Roman emperor in the third century. Ancient writers described him as wasteful and strange, but many of their stories are not reliable. One ancient history book says he dropped flowers on his guests from the ceiling, but the story was probably made up. Roses were hard to find in London in winter, so it is said that during the four months of painting, the artist had petals sent from the south of France every week.

The businessman Sir John Aird ordered it for 4,000 pounds, and it was shown at the Royal Academy in 1888. But after the painter died, this kind of art went out of fashion, and in the 1930s it sold for less than 500 guineas. Later its fame grew again, and at an auction in 1993 it sold for 1.5 million pounds.
