Something is wrong with the mirror!? The puzzle of Manet's last great painting.
A barmaid stands behind the counter at the Folies-Bergère, a popular music hall in Paris. Behind her is a large mirror. The busy crowd, the chandeliers and the gentleman are all reflections in that mirror. Manet finished it in 1882, the year before he died. It was his last major painting.
The model was a real barmaid named Suzon, who worked there. Manet was already ill, so he set up a bar counter in his studio and asked her to pose. The shine on the glass bottles and the oranges shows Manet's lively, skillful brushwork.
The painting was shown at the Salon of 1882. Later, Manet's friend, the composer Emmanuel Chabrier, owned it and hung it above his piano. In the 1920s, the British businessman Samuel Courtauld bought it. Today it is the treasure of the Courtauld Gallery in London.
A woman works at a bar in Paris. She stands behind a long table with bottles and oranges. Behind her is a big mirror. But the mirror looks strange! Also, find Manet's name on a bottle.

Her reflection is shifted to the right, and the gentleman she is facing appears only in the upper right. Since 1882, people have said it is impossible. In 2000, a researcher recreated the scene and showed it can work if the viewer stands off to one side.
Look closely at the label on a bottle at the lower left. It says 'Manet 1882'. Most painters sign in a corner, but Manet hid his name on the label of a bottle inside the scene.
The red triangle on the beer bottles is the logo of Bass Pale Ale from Britain. This triangle is famous as the first trademark registered in the UK, in 1876. British beer was sold in a Paris music hall.
In the top left corner, you can see two legs in green shoes. They belong to a trapeze artist performing above the crowd. Circus-style acts were popular at the Folies-Bergère.

The man in the mirror
The man in a top hat appears only in the mirror. At first, he seems to be standing where we are. But a reconstruction showed that the scene can work if it is seen from an angle.
