Story

A young mother rests her chin on her hand and watches a baby asleep in a cradle. The French painter Berthe Morisot made this picture in 1872, when she was 31. The models were her older sister Edma and Edma's new baby, Blanche. Today the painting hangs in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

Berthe and Edma studied painting together as girls, and both wanted to become artists. But in France at that time, it was very hard for a married woman to keep painting. Edma married and gave up art, while Berthe kept going. The thin veil is painted with quick, light strokes of white and pink.

In 1874, Morisot showed this painting at what we now call the first Impressionist exhibition. She was the only woman among the artists. The painting stayed with her family for many years, and the French national museums bought it in 1930. Today it is loved around the world as a great Impressionist picture of a mother and child.

Just a few quick strokes of white and pink make the thin cloth look see-through. It cuts diagonally between the mother and the baby.

Hand on the veil
