Story

A gentleman in a top hat, his two daughters and a slim dog cross the Place de la Concorde in Paris. Edgar Degas painted this in 1875. The man is Viscount Lepic, a painter and printmaker who was Degas's friend. The girls are Eylau and Janine. The painting is now in the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Degas boldly cut off the figures at the edges and left an empty square in the middle. The family members face different ways, and an unknown man stands at the far left. It looks like a moment of city life caught by chance. Experts point to the influence of photography and of the Japanese prints that Degas collected.

In 1911, the German collector Otto Gerstenberg bought this painting, and it stayed in Berlin. At the end of World War II, it was taken to the Soviet Union, and for a long time people believed it had been lost in the war. In 1995, it was shown at the Hermitage for the first time in about 50 years, and the world was amazed.

A man walks with his two girls and a dog. Degas cut the people at the edges, like a photo. People thought this painting was lost in the war. But in 1995, it appeared again in Russia!
