パリでイギリス人の両親のもとに生まれました。モネやルノワールと同じ画塾で学び、印象派の仲間になります。人物はほとんど描かず、セーヌ川ぞいの村や、大きな空、洪水の町など、風景だけを描きつづけました。父の事業が戦争でつぶれてからは貧しい暮らしが続き、絵が高く評価されたのは亡くなったあとでした。
Sisley was born in Paris to English parents. He studied at the same studio as Monet and Renoir and joined the Impressionists. He almost never painted people. Instead, he painted landscapes: villages along the Seine, wide skies and even towns under flood water. After his father's business failed because of war, he lived in poverty. His paintings became valuable only after his death.
