Story池の水面を、まるで上からのぞきこむように描いた絵です。岸も地平線もなく、水に浮かぶ睡蓮の葉と、ピンクや白の花、そして水にうつる空の青と雲だけが画面に広がっています。パリ郊外の村ジヴェルニーにあるモネ自身の庭の池を描いた、1906年の作品です。
This painting shows the surface of a pond, as if we are looking down into it. There is no shore and no horizon. We see only lily pads, pink and white flowers, and the blue sky and clouds reflected in the water. Monet painted his own pond in Giverny, near Paris, in 1906.
モネは晩年の30年ほど、この池の睡蓮ばかりを描き続け、その数は約250点にのぼります。最初は橋や岸も描いていましたが、しだいに水面だけに近づいていきました。水の上の花と、水の中の空。上と下が溶けあうふしぎな世界は、のちの抽象絵画にも影響を与えたと言われます。
In the last 30 years of his life, Monet painted the water lilies in this pond again and again, about 250 times. At first he included the bridge and the shore, but slowly he moved closer to the water's surface. Flowers on the water and sky in the water mix together. This strange world is said to have influenced later abstract painting.
この絵は、シカゴの実業家マーティン・ライアソンのコレクションから、1933年にシカゴ美術館に入りました。モネの睡蓮は世界中の美術館にあり、パリのオランジュリー美術館には、部屋の壁をぐるりと囲む巨大な睡蓮の連作があります。日本にも、モネの睡蓮を持つ美術館がいくつもあります。
This painting came to the Art Institute of Chicago in 1933 from the collection of the Chicago businessman Martin A. Ryerson. Monet's water lilies are in museums all over the world. At the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris, huge water lily paintings cover the walls of two oval rooms. Several museums in Japan also own Monet's water lilies.

Monet painted about 250 pictures of water lilies. The same pond looks completely different with the time of day, the season and the weather. For Monet, the pond was a subject he could never finish painting.
ヨーロッパの野生の睡蓮はほとんど白でした。1889年のパリ万博で、フランスの園芸家ラトゥール＝マルリアックがピンクや黄色の睡蓮を発表。モネはのちに彼の農園から睡蓮を取り寄せ、池に植えました。
Wild water lilies in Europe were mostly white. At the 1889 World's Fair in Paris, the French gardener Latour-Marliac showed pink and yellow water lilies. Monet later ordered water lilies from his nursery for his pond.
実業家・松方幸次郎がモネから買った大作『睡蓮、柳の反映』は、戦争の混乱で行方不明に。2016年、ルーヴル美術館で上半分が欠けた状態で見つかり、修復されて東京の国立西洋美術館で公開されました。
The Japanese businessman Matsukata Kojiro bought a large water lily painting from Monet. It went missing during the war. In 2016, it was found in the Louvre with its upper half missing. After restoration, it was shown at the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo.
この絵の青や白のもやもやした部分は、池にうつった空と雲です。本物の空は画面の外。見る人は、水面を見ながら空を見ていることになります。上下の感覚がふしぎにゆらぐ、モネのしかけです。
The soft blue and white areas are the sky and clouds reflected in the pond. The real sky is outside the picture. So when we look at the water, we are also looking at the sky. Monet's trick makes us lose our sense of up and down.

奥の葉は横に細長く、手前の葉は丸く大きく描かれ、奥行きを感じさせます。
The far leaves are thin and flat, and the near leaves are round and large. This creates a feeling of depth.
