In a blue-violet fog, a railway bridge over the River Thames lies faintly across the picture. White steam from a train rises on the bridge, and the towers of the Houses of Parliament stand in silhouette at the right. Sunlight from above scatters sparkles over the river. It belongs to Monet's London series and is signed "Claude Monet 1903" at the lower left. It is now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, France.
Between 1899 and 1901, Monet visited London several times and worked from the Savoy Hotel on the Thames. Looking at the river from his room, he could see Charing Cross Bridge to the right and Waterloo Bridge to the left. He chased the light as it changed with the fog and smoke, and painted this bridge more than 30 times. Many of the pictures were finished in his studio in Giverny, France.
In 1904, the London series was shown at a gallery in Paris and was a great success. This painting belonged to Raymond Koechlin, an art collector and scholar. In 1933, it was given to the Lyon museum through his will. Other paintings of the same bridge are spread across museums around the world, in cities such as Chicago, Boston and Tokyo.
This is London in the fog. A long bridge crosses the river. A train makes white smoke. The sun shines through the fog. Everything looks soft and blue.

A suspension bridge designed by the engineer Brunel once stood here. When it was replaced by a railway bridge in the 1860s, its chains were reused for the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol. Today's railway bridge still stands on the brick piers of Brunel's bridge.
In 2012, seven famous paintings, including Monet's "Charing Cross Bridge" and "Waterloo Bridge", were stolen from the Kunsthal in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The thieves were caught, but it is said the paintings may have been burned. They have never been found.
The National Museum of Western Art in Ueno, Tokyo, also has a painting of Charing Cross Bridge by Monet. It comes from the collection of the businessman Kojiro Matsukata. Each picture of the bridge has different fog colors and light, so it is fun to compare them.
Monet wanted to paint not the shapes of things, but the same light and air that wraps around everything. He called it the "enveloppe". In this picture, the bridge, the train and the Houses of Parliament all melt together in the same blue-violet light.
