London glows at sunset. Across the River Thames, the towers of the Houses of Parliament float as blue shapes. Claude Monet painted this picture and wrote '1903' on it. It is now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington. Orange and pink sunlight sparkles on the water.
Between 1899 and 1901, Monet visited London several times. He painted Parliament from St Thomas' Hospital, on the other side of the Thames. In this series, he painted the same building again and again to compare fog, smoke and changing light. Many of the London pictures he started there were finished in his studio at Giverny in France.
In 1904, Monet showed 37 pictures of London at the Durand-Ruel gallery in Paris, and this was one of them. Later, the American collector Chester Dale bought it. Through his will, it went to the National Gallery of Art in 1963. Today it is one of the best-known pictures in Monet's London series.

In 2023, American researchers published a study of paintings by Turner and Monet. They found that the hazier views matched the rise of air pollution from coal smoke in the 19th century. The foggy paintings may show the air of that time. However, some experts disagree, saying changes in style may also explain it.
Monet is said to have remarked that without the fog, London would not be a beautiful city. At that time, London fog was a yellowish smog mixed with coal smoke. Monet enjoyed it as a treasure box of color and light.
In a letter to his dealer, Monet wrote that whether his Cathedral and London pictures were painted from life or not was nobody's business and not important at all. He finished many of the London pictures in his studio at Giverny. What mattered was the finished work.
Monet first came to London in 1870 to escape the Franco-Prussian War. There he saw paintings by Turner and Constable, and they are said to have inspired his ideas about fog and light. About 30 years later, he came back to paint the fog.
