This is the front of the Gothic cathedral in Rouen, a city in northern France. In strong sunlight, the stone walls shine gold and white, and the hollows and shadows turn blue. A small patch of blue sky makes the building look even brighter. Its full title is 'The Portal and the Tower of Saint-Romain, Full Sunlight'. Monet painted it in 1893.
In the springs of 1892 and 1893, Monet rented rooms opposite the cathedral and painted the same front from the window again and again. Morning fog, midday light, evening shadows. In more than 30 canvases, he showed how light changes the color of stone through the day. He finished them in his studio in Giverny.
In 1895, twenty of the paintings were shown together at a gallery in Paris. Visitors were amazed to see so many cathedrals side by side. Monet's close friend Georges Clemenceau, who later became prime minister of France, wrote an article praising the series. Today the Musée d'Orsay owns five of them.
This is a very big church in France. It is made of stone. Monet painted it more than 30 times. In the morning, at noon and in the evening, the colors are different. Here, the sun makes it gold!

While working on the series, Monet wrote to his family that he had a nightmare. The cathedral was falling on him, and it looked blue, pink or yellow. His mind was completely full of light and color.
Up close, the paint is built up in thick layers, with a rough surface. It looks like the stone wall of the cathedral itself. Monet added color many times to adjust the feeling of light.
In 1969, the American Pop artist Roy Lichtenstein made his own Rouen Cathedral series using dots like comic-book printing. It was a witty tribute that turned Monet's study of light into printed dots.
In 1895, the politician Georges Clemenceau wrote a newspaper article praising the series. He later became prime minister, supported Monet in his old age and helped create the Water Lilies rooms at the Orangerie.
