これはパイプではない！？This is not a pipe!?
マグリットは、ていねいに描いたパイプの絵の下に、フランス語で「これはパイプではない」と書きました。見た人は「どう見てもパイプなのに」と首をかしげます。でも、この絵にタバコをつめて吸うことはできません。絵はあくまで本物を写した「イメージ」にすぎない、というわけです。言葉と絵と物の関係を問いかけたこの作品は、のちの哲学者やデザイナーにも大きな影響をあたえました。
Under a carefully painted pipe, Magritte wrote in French: "This is not a pipe." Viewers scratch their heads—it clearly looks like a pipe! But you cannot fill this picture with tobacco and smoke it. It is only an image of a pipe. By questioning how words, pictures and real objects relate, this work deeply influenced later philosophers and designers.

ポール・マッカートニーはマグリットの大ファンで、大きな緑のリンゴを描いた絵を手に入れました。この絵がヒントになって、ビートルズの会社「アップル」の名前とリンゴのロゴが生まれたと言われています。
Paul McCartney was a big Magritte fan and owned his painting of a large green apple. That painting is said to have inspired the name and apple logo of the Beatles' company, Apple.
マグリットはスーツに山高帽という、まるで会社員のようなかっこうでくらし、ブリュッセルの自宅で絵を描きました。若いころは壁紙やポスターのデザインの仕事でお金をかせいでいました。山高帽の男は、彼の絵の名物キャラクターです。
Magritte lived like an ordinary office worker, in a suit and bowler hat, and painted at home in Brussels. When he was young, he earned money designing wallpaper and posters. The man in the bowler hat became the star of his paintings.
