Sculptures small enough for matchboxes
During the Second World War, as Giacometti tried to capture people exactly as he saw them, his sculptures kept getting smaller. When he returned to Paris after the war, several years of work reportedly fit into a few matchboxes. Later his figures grew tall and very thin, and his famous wire-like style was born.

Giacometti's portrait appeared on the Swiss 100-franc note issued from 1998, which also showed designs based on his sculpture. Very few sculptors have ever appeared on their country's money.
Giacometti often used his brother Diego and his wife Annette as models. He made them sit for hours while he reworked or destroyed his work again and again, often saying that it was not right.
Giacometti's figures are tall and slender.
