ベッドの上から始まった画家人生A painting life that began in bed
18歳のとき、フリーダの乗ったバスが路面電車とぶつかり、彼女は体じゅうに大けがを負いました。何か月もベッドから動けない彼女のために、母親はベッドの天井に鏡を取り付け、寝たまま使える画架を用意しました。鏡にうつる自分を見つめて描いたのが、自画像の始まりです。「私がいちばんよく知っているのは自分だから」という意味の言葉も残しています。
At 18, Frida was badly injured when the bus she was riding collided with a streetcar. For months she could not leave her bed, so her mother fixed a mirror above it and gave her an easel she could use lying down. Looking at her own reflection, she began painting self-portraits. She later explained that she painted herself because she was the subject she knew best.

フリーダは1907年生まれですが、自分では1910年生まれだと言っていました。1910年はメキシコ革命が始まった年。新しいメキシコといっしょに生まれた、と言いたかったのだと考えられています。
Frida was born in 1907, but she said she was born in 1910—the year the Mexican Revolution began. People think she wanted to be seen as a daughter of the new Mexico.
1953年、メキシコで初めての個展が開かれたとき、フリーダは体調が悪く、医者から外出を止められていました。それでも救急車で会場にやって来て、運びこまれたベッドに横になったまま、お客さんを迎えたのです。
In 1953, when her first solo exhibition in Mexico opened, Frida was very ill and her doctors told her to stay home. She arrived by ambulance anyway and greeted her guests while lying in a bed set up in the gallery.
1939年、パリでの展覧会のあと、フランス政府がフリーダの自画像「ザ・フレーム」を買い上げました。20世紀のメキシコの画家の作品がヨーロッパの大きな美術館のコレクションに入ったのは、これが初めてと言われています。今はパリのポンピドゥー・センターにあります。
In 1939, after her exhibition in Paris, the French government bought her self-portrait The Frame. It is said to be the first work by a 20th-century Mexican artist to enter a major European museum collection. Today it is in the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

1954年に亡くなりました。ヨーロッパなど「死後70年」の国では2024年の年末で保護が終わりました。でも、アメリカ（作品の発表から95年）や、もっと長く守る国もあり、まだ著作権が残っている作品があります。Died in 1954. In "life plus 70 years" countries, the copyright ended in 2024, but some works are still protected in other countries, such as the US.
