Escaping west just before the Berlin Wall
Richter was born in Dresden, in East Germany, grew up mainly in small towns in the east, and later studied art in Dresden. Wanting to paint freely, he moved to West Germany in 1961, a few months before the Berlin Wall was built, and studied again at the art academy in Düsseldorf. There he created his "photo-paintings" — pictures copied from photographs and then blurred — and became famous worldwide.

In 2012, an abstract painting by Richter owned by guitarist Eric Clapton sold at auction for about £21.3 million ($34.2 million). At the time, it was the highest price ever paid for a work by a living artist.
Richter's window in Cologne Cathedral replaced stained glass lost in the war. He used 72 colors also found in the cathedral's older windows, and a computer's random numbers helped arrange the squares. Some people argued about whether it suited such a holy place.
Richter blurred his paintings to make them look like old photos.
