Surviving the atomic bomb at 15
At 15, Hirayama was working in Hiroshima as a student laborer when the atomic bomb fell. He suffered its effects for years, and at about 29, fearing for his life, he painted Transmission of Buddhism. It shows Xuanzang, the monk who brought Buddhist teachings back from India. This work led Hirayama to make the Silk Road, the route by which Buddhism traveled, his lifelong theme.

Even after he became famous for Buddhist and Silk Road paintings, Hirayama could not bring himself to paint the bombing. In the summer of 1979, 34 years later, a visit to the Peace Memorial Park finally settled his feelings, and he completed Hiroshima Shohen-zu, with Fudo Myoo watching over the people in the flames.
The murals at Yakushiji Temple in Nara were offered on December 31, 2000 — the last day of the 20th century. Hirayama actually traveled Xuanzang's route, and the project took about 30 years, including research, with some 4,000 sketches.
Hirayama proposed a 'Red Cross for Cultural Heritage,' an idea of protecting endangered treasures across national borders. He became a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in 1988 and helped protect sites such as Dunhuang and Angkor.
