He cancelled a restaurant commission!
In 1958 Rothko was asked to paint large murals for the Four Seasons, a luxury restaurant in New York's Seagram Building. But he seems to have decided that a place for wealthy diners was wrong for his art, and he cancelled the contract. Nine of the paintings were given to the Tate in London. They arrived on the very day Rothko died.
Surprising facts
Rothko said that people who weep before his pictures are having the same religious experience he had when painting them. He did not see his paintings as mere arrangements of colour. He wanted them to express basic human emotions, such as tragedy and ecstasy.
The Rothko Chapel, commissioned by the art collectors John and Dominique de Menil, opened in 1971. But Rothko had died the year before, so he never saw his paintings installed there.
