The TV 'Naked General' vs. the real Kiyoshi
Thanks to the TV drama and films called 'The Naked General,' Yamashita is known as a man in a sleeveless undershirt and shorts who paints as he wanders. But the real Kiyoshi hardly drew on his travels. He burned the scenes into his memory and made his paper collages after coming home. The drama's stories are fiction. In real life, he was quite stylish, often wearing a beret and a jacket when he went out.

Born in Asakusa, Tokyo, Kiyoshi entered Yawata Gakuen in Chiba in 1934, at 12, and discovered torn-paper pictures there. He loved tearing colored paper into tiny pieces and pasting them down, and soon even adult artists were impressed by his skill.
In 1940, at 18, Kiyoshi suddenly left the school and began wandering around Japan. For more than ten years he kept coming back and setting off again. In 1954 he was found in Kagoshima by people who had been searching for him, and it became big news.
Known as 'Japan's Van Gogh,' Kiyoshi traveled in Europe for about 40 days in 1961 and visited Van Gogh's grave. He had heard the often-repeated story that Van Gogh sold only one painting in his lifetime. He felt sorry for him and was glad that his own work was recognized while he was alive.
Yamashita made his pictures from memory after his journeys.
