Miss Spring, born after the earthquake
Nara, from Hirosaki in Aomori, was so shocked by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake that for a while he could not pick up a brush. In April 2012, working toward a summer exhibition, he started again and painted Miss Spring. The girl looking straight at us has no single model, but the museum describes her as a kind of self-portrait of people trying to rise again after the disaster.

After graduate school at Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts, Nara moved to Germany in 1988 and studied at the Düsseldorf art academy under painters including A.R. Penck. He later worked in Cologne, and came home to Japan in 2000 after about 12 years in Germany.
In 2019, Nara's painting Knife Behind Back (2000) sold at auction in Hong Kong for about HK$195.7 million (about US$24.9 million). At the time, it was the most expensive work by a Japanese artist ever sold at auction, beating the record held by Yayoi Kusama.
