A urinal voted the top artwork
In 1917 Duchamp bought a urinal, signed it with the fake name "R. Mutt," and submitted it to an exhibition as Fountain. The show promised to accept, without a jury, the work of any artist who paid the fee, but Fountain was not displayed. Still, his idea—that an artist can create a work by choosing an object, not by making it—changed art forever. In 2004, a poll of 500 art experts named it the most influential modern artwork.
