I will become Van Gogh!'
Born into a blacksmith's family in Aomori, Munakata saw a picture of Van Gogh's Sunflowers in a magazine at about 18 and declared, 'I will become Van Gogh!' He moved to Tokyo at 21 to paint in oils but kept failing to get into exhibitions. Then he discovered woodblock prints, called his own prints 'hanga' with a special character for 'board,' and in 1956 won the top prize for prints at the Venice Biennale.

At a 1936 exhibition, Munakata brought the twenty prints of Yamato shi Uruwashi mounted in four frames, but was told that only one frame could be shown. Yanagi Soetsu and Hamada Shoji happened to see the work, loved it, helped get it shown, and bought it for the soon-to-open Japan Folk Crafts Museum. It changed Munakata's life.
