こわされた幻の壁画The mural that was destroyed
1933年、リベラはニューヨークのロックフェラー・センターに巨大な壁画を描いていました。ところが絵の中に、ソ連の指導者レーニンの顔を描き入れたことが大問題になります。別の人に描きかえるよう言われてもリベラは断り、作業は止められ、壁画は翌年こわされてしまいました。リベラは写真をもとに、メキシコ・シティのベジャス・アルテス宮殿で同じテーマの壁画を描き直しました。
In 1933 Rivera was painting a huge mural in New York's Rockefeller Center. But he included a portrait of the Soviet leader Lenin, which caused a scandal. When he was told to replace the face, he refused. Work was stopped, and the mural was destroyed the next year. Using photographs, Rivera repainted the same theme at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City.

リベラは画家フリーダ・カーロと1929年に結婚し、1939年にいったん離婚しましたが、翌年の1940年にまた結婚しました。二人の年の差は21歳。フリーダはリベラの姿を、何度も絵に描いています。
Rivera married the painter Frida Kahlo in 1929, divorced her in 1939, and married her again in 1940. He was 21 years older than Frida, who painted him many times.
リベラは古代メキシコの土器や石の彫刻を何万点も集めていました。それを展示するために、自分で設計したピラミッドのような石造りの建物が「アナワカリ美術館」です。今はメキシコ・シティの人気の美術館になっています。
Rivera collected tens of thousands of ancient Mexican pots and stone sculptures. To show them, he designed a stone building that looks like a pyramid: the Anahuacalli Museum, now a popular museum in Mexico City.
