Posada was born in Aguascalientes, Mexico. In Mexico City, he made prints for newspapers and cheap booklets. He showed news, fashions and politicians as skeletons, or calaveras, with lots of humor. His skeletons are linked to the Day of the Dead and are still a symbol of Mexico today. He is said to have made thousands of prints in his life.
