生きている画家で史上最高額A record price for a living artist
2018年、ホックニーの《芸術家の肖像（2人の人物のいるプール）》がオークションで約9030万ドルで落札され、当時「生きている画家の作品」として史上最高の値段になりました。プールのそばに立つ男性と、水の中を泳ぐ人。ゆらめく水を描くことに夢中だったホックニーらしい1枚です。彼は2026年6月、88歳で亡くなりました。
In 2018, Hockney's Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) sold at auction for about $90.3 million, then a record for a work by a living artist. A man stands by a pool while another swims underwater. It shows his love of painting moving water. Hockney died in June 2026, at the age of 88.

ホックニーは2001年の本『秘密の知識』で、ファン・エイクやカラヴァッジョ、アングルたちが、レンズや鏡などの道具を使って絵を描いていた可能性があると主張しました。賛成と反対で大きな議論になりましたが、画家ならではの鋭い観察から生まれた説です。
In his 2001 book Secret Knowledge, Hockney argued that artists such as van Eyck, Caravaggio and Ingres may have used lenses and mirrors to help them paint. The idea caused a big debate, but it came from a painter's sharp eye.
ホックニーは新しい道具が大好きで、iPhoneやiPadでもたくさんの絵を描きました。2018年にロンドンのウェストミンスター寺院に入ったステンドグラス「女王の窓」も、iPadで下絵を描いたもの。光る画面はステンドグラスに似ている、と考えたからです。
Hockney loved new tools and made many pictures on the iPhone and iPad. Even The Queen's Window, a stained-glass window placed in Westminster Abbey in 2018, was designed on an iPad. He felt a glowing screen was a lot like stained glass.
Hockney liked to play with perspective in his paintings.
