Frottage: a technique born from a wooden floor
On a rainy day in 1925, Ernst stared at the grain of the floorboards in an inn and began to see faces and forests in it. He laid paper on the floor and rubbed it with a pencil to copy the patterns. This was the start of frottage, or rubbing. Building images from chance patterns became an important Surrealist technique.
