1961年、リキテンスタインは、ディズニーの子ども向け絵本の絵を指さした息子に「パパにはこんなにうまく描けないでしょ」と言われ、それならと描いたのが《ルック・ミッキー》だと伝えられています。印刷の小さな点（ベンデイ・ドット）までわざと手で描きこむ作戦は大当たり。漫画を「名画」にしてしまったこの絵で、彼はポップアートの主役に躍り出ました。
In 1961, so the story goes, one of his sons pointed to a picture in a Disney children's book and said, 'I bet you can't paint as good as that, Dad.' Lichtenstein answered with Look Mickey. He even painted the tiny printing dots, called Ben-Day dots, on purpose. The joke worked: this comic-strip picture made him a leading star of Pop Art.

1964年、有名な雑誌『ライフ』は、彼の記事に「彼はアメリカで最悪の画家か？」という見出しをつけました。漫画をまねしているだけだ、と批判されたのです。ところが今では、彼の作品は世界中の大きな美術館に飾られています。
In 1964, LIFE magazine ran a story about him with the headline 'Is He the Worst Artist in the U.S.?' Critics said he only copied comics. Today his paintings hang in major museums around the world.
リキテンスタインは漫画だけでなく、名画も自分流に描き直しました。1969年には、モネが描いたルーアン大聖堂や積みわらを、印刷のような点や線などの機械的な模様で表した連作を作っています。印象派の「光」を、ポップアートの方法で描くという遊び心たっぷりの挑戦でした。
He also remade famous paintings in his own style. In 1969 he painted Monet's Rouen Cathedral and haystacks using printing-style dots and other mechanical-looking patterns. It was a playful way to show Impressionist light with Pop Art tools.
