The white horse in his paintings
A small white horse sometimes appears in Higashiyama's landscapes. One of the best-known examples is Midori Hibiku, a 1982 painting of Mishaka Pond in the Tateshina Highlands of Nagano. A lone white horse walks quietly beside a lake that mirrors the green trees. Higashiyama himself linked the scene to the second movement of a piece of music. What the horse means is left to each viewer's imagination.

Road, which shows just a single path, is based on a pasture on the Tanesashi Coast in Aomori. Higashiyama brightened the distant sky and let the road rise out of the picture, giving a feeling of the journey ahead. It is said to carry hope for Japan's fresh start after the war.
Toshodaiji Temple in Nara holds a national-treasure statue of the monk Ganjin. For the hall where it stands, Higashiyama spent more than ten years, from 1971 to 1982, painting Japanese mountains and seas and Chinese landscapes. The paintings are usually closed to the public and shown only a few days a year.
Higashiyama's landscapes feel calm and serene.
