Patterns discovered at the Alhambra
In 1922, Escher visited the Alhambra palace in Granada, Spain, and was amazed by its Islamic tile patterns. He returned in 1936 to study and copy them. This second visit deepened his interest, and he went on to create many works in which birds, fish and lizards fit together with no gaps. Although he had no formal training in mathematics, mathematicians around the world became fascinated by his work.
Surprising facts
In 1969 Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones wrote asking Escher to design an album cover. Escher said no—and added a note asking that Mr. Jagger be told he was not "Maurits" to him, a gentle complaint about the overly friendly greeting.
Escher struggled at school and even failed exams. He entered a school to study architecture, but a teacher saw his talent for printmaking, so he switched to graphic arts. That choice led to his famous impossible worlds.
Escher's tessellations fit birds and fish together with no gaps.
