2017年、バスキアが1982年に描いた《無題》（ドクロのような顔の絵）がオークションにかけられ、1億1050万ドル（当時約123億円）で落札されました。当時、アメリカの画家の作品としてオークション史上最高の値段でした。買ったのは日本の実業家・前澤友作さん。じつはこの絵、1984年には1万9000ドルで売られていました。33年で5000倍以上になったのです。
In 2017, Basquiat's 1982 painting Untitled, a fierce skull-like face, sold at auction for $110.5 million — then the auction record for a work by an American artist. The buyer was Japanese businessman Yusaku Maezawa. Back in 1984, the same painting had sold for just $19,000. In 33 years, its price grew more than 5,000 times.

7歳ごろ、交通事故にあって入院したバスキアに、お母さんが人体の解剖図の本『グレイの解剖学』をプレゼントしました。骨や体の中の図は、その後の彼の絵にくり返し登場します。ドクロのような顔の秘密は、ここにあるのかもしれません。
When Basquiat was about seven, he was hit by a car and spent time in hospital. His mother gave him Gray's Anatomy, a book of medical drawings. Bones and body parts appear again and again in his later art.
1981年、バンド「ブロンディ」のヒット曲『ラプチュア』のミュージックビデオに、バスキアがDJ役で出ています。本当は有名なDJが出る予定でしたが来なかったため、撮影現場にいたバスキアが代わりに出たのです。
In 1981, Basquiat appeared as the DJ in the music video for Blondie's hit 'Rapture.' The famous DJ who was supposed to appear didn't show up, so Basquiat, who was on set, took his place.
1970年代の終わり、ニューヨークの壁に「SAMO©」というなぞめいた言葉の落書きが次々と現れ、話題になりました。書いていたのは10代のバスキアと友だち。このSAMO©の活動で、バスキアは若い芸術家として注目されはじめました。
In the late 1970s, mysterious messages signed 'SAMO©' kept appearing on walls in New York. They were written by the teenage Basquiat and a friend. The SAMO© project helped bring him early attention as an artist.
Basquiat started out writing graffiti on the streets of New York.
