Painting as if dancing on the floor
Pollock did not put his canvas on an easel. He spread it on the studio floor and moved around it, dripping and flinging paint with sticks and hardened brushes. Photographs and a film made by Hans Namuth in 1950 made this "drip painting" famous, and spread the idea that a painting can be a record of the act of painting itself.

When Australia bought Blue Poles, newspapers and politicians called it a waste of taxpayers' money. Today it is loved as a national treasure and is one of the signature works of the National Gallery of Australia.
Many of Pollock's works have numbers instead of titles. His wife, the painter Lee Krasner, explained that numbers were neutral and made people look at the painting itself. Even Autumn Rhythm was first called Number 30.
