ベーコンは、スペインの画家ベラスケスの《教皇インノケンティウス10世の肖像》に夢中になり、20年あまりの間に50点ほどの変奏を描いたとされます。ところが彼は写真などの複製だけを見て描いていて、1954年にイタリアを訪れたときも、ローマにある本物をわざと見に行かなかったと言われています。本物から離れていたからこそ、思いきり自由に描けたのかもしれません。
Bacon was obsessed with Velázquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X and is said to have painted about 50 versions of it over some 20 years. Yet he worked only from reproductions. When he visited Italy in 1954, he reportedly chose not to go and see the real painting in Rome. Perhaps keeping his distance gave him the freedom to change it so boldly.

ロンドンにあったベーコンのアトリエは、絵の具や写真、古い新聞が床に積み重なり、足の踏み場もないほどでした。彼の死後、7000点以上の品物が1つずつ記録され、1998年に生まれ故郷のアイルランド・ダブリンの美術館へ運ばれて、そっくりそのまま再現されました。2001年から公開されています。
Bacon's London studio was famously messy, with paint, photos and old newspapers piled on the floor. After his death, more than 7,000 items were recorded one by one and moved in 1998 to a gallery in Dublin, his birthplace, where the studio was rebuilt exactly. It has been open to the public since 2001.

Bacon never studied at an art school. As a young man he worked as a designer of furniture and rugs, and he taught himself to paint. Even so, he became one of the leading painters of the 20th century.
2013年、友人の画家ルシアン・フロイドを描いた3枚組の絵が、オークションで約1億4240万ドルで落札されました。これは当時、オークションで売られた美術品として史上最高の値段でした。
In 2013, his three-panel portrait of his friend, the painter Lucian Freud, sold at auction for about $142.4 million. At the time, it was the highest price ever paid for an artwork at auction.
