地下鉄が彼のアトリエだったThe subway was his studio
1980年ごろ、ニューヨークの地下鉄では、広告の入っていない広告板に黒い紙が貼られていました。ヘリングはそこに白いチョークで、ハイハイする赤ちゃんや吠える犬をすばやく描きはじめます。1枚にかかるのはわずか数分。5年ほどで数千枚を描き、通勤する人たちは新しい絵を楽しみにするようになりました。ただし勝手に描くので、何度も警察につかまったそうです。
Around 1980, empty ad panels in the New York subway were covered with black paper. Haring began drawing on them in white chalk — crawling babies, barking dogs — in just a few minutes each. Over about five years he made thousands of drawings, and commuters looked forward to new ones. Because he had no permission, he was caught by the police several times.

ヘリングは「アートはみんなのもの」と考え、1986年、ニューヨークに自分の絵のグッズを手ごろな値段で売る「ポップショップ」を開きました。1988年には東京・青山にも「ポップショップ東京」を開店。ただし売れ行きがのびなかったといわれ、その年の夏に閉店しています。
Haring believed art was for everyone. In 1986 he opened the Pop Shop in New York to sell affordable goods with his art. In 1988 he opened a Pop Shop in Aoyama, Tokyo, too, but it reportedly did not sell well and closed that summer.
ヘリングの作品を専門に集めた美術館が、山梨県北杜市の八ヶ岳のふもとにあります。2007年に開館した中村キース・ヘリング美術館で、作品およそ300点に加えて、写真や映像、生前に作られたグッズなど約700点の関連資料を持っています。
A museum devoted to Haring stands at the foot of the Yatsugatake mountains in Hokuto, Yamanashi. The Nakamura Keith Haring Collection, opened in 2007, holds about 300 works plus about 700 related items, such as photos, films and goods made in his lifetime.
Haring painted a huge mural on a church wall in Pisa.
