フィレンツェの近くの村に生まれました。それまでの平たく型どおりの宗教画とちがい、重さのある体や、悲しみ・おどろきといった人の気持ちを描いて、絵画を大きく変えました。代表作はパドヴァのスクロヴェーニ礼拝堂の壁画（1305年ごろ）です。晩年はフィレンツェ大聖堂の鐘楼の設計も任され、今も「ジョットの鐘楼」と呼ばれています。
Giotto was born in a village near Florence. Before him, religious pictures were often flat and followed fixed patterns. Giotto painted bodies that looked solid and faces that showed real feelings, like sadness and surprise. This changed painting forever. His most famous work is the fresco cycle in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua (around 1305). Late in life he designed the bell tower of Florence Cathedral, still called Giotto's Campanile.
