This painting shows Jesus after he was taken down from the cross. His mother Mary and his followers gather around and mourn. Giotto painted it around 1305 on a wall of the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, Italy. The chapel walls are covered with almost 40 scenes from the lives of Jesus and Mary.
Compared with many earlier Italian paintings, Giotto's figures look more solid and three-dimensional. Their bodies have a real sense of weight. Two people in front sit with their backs to us, so we feel we are there too. The slanting line of the rock leads our eyes to the faces of Mary and Jesus.
Giotto is called the father of Western painting. He opened the way to the Renaissance. Each angel in the sky shows grief in a different way. Some cover their faces, and some pull at their hair. The chapel ceiling is deep blue with gold stars. In 2021, Padua's 14th-century frescoes, including this chapel, became a World Heritage Site.

In the same chapel, Giotto painted the Star of Bethlehem as a comet. It was probably based on Halley's Comet, seen in 1301. So a European space probe was named Giotto. It flew close to Halley's Comet in 1986.
The chapel was built by a banker, Enrico Scrovegni. His father, Reginaldo, was known for lending money at high interest. Dante even put him in Hell in the Divine Comedy. Some say the chapel was built to make up for his father's sins.
To protect the paintings, visitors first wait about 15 minutes in a special room that controls the air. This stops humidity and dust from coming in. Time inside the chapel is also short.
According to Vasari, a messenger from the Pope asked Giotto to show his skill. Giotto simply drew a perfect circle in red paint, without a compass. This story gave Italy a saying: 'rounder than Giotto's O'.
