About 70 meters long! A 950-year-old comic strip in embroidery.
The Bayeux Tapestry is a long embroidered picture story, about 70 meters long. It shows the Norman Conquest of 1066, when Duke William of Normandy conquered England. It was made in the 1070s. It is usually shown in a museum in Bayeux, in northwest France.
This picture is part of the Battle of Hastings. In the middle, Bishop Odo of Bayeux raises a club. He was William's half-brother, and he probably ordered the tapestry. Along the top and bottom edges, there are small animals and fallen soldiers. You read the story from left to right, like a comic.
It also shows Halley's Comet, which appeared in 1066. Napoleon put it on show in Paris in 1803–1804 to build support for attacking Britain. The very last part is lost, so we do not know how the story ended.
This is a very long picture. It is about 70 meters long! People made it with thread on cloth. It tells the story of a battle in 1066. Here, a bishop holds a club.
A tapestry is woven, but this is embroidery. Wool thread was stitched onto linen cloth. The old name simply stuck. Only about ten colours of wool are said to have been used.
Experts think it was made in England. In July 2026, it crossed the sea to the British Museum under tight security. The special display opened in September. News called it its first trip home since it was made.
The Latin words say, 'Here Bishop Odo, holding a club, encourages the young men.' People often say a churchman could not shed blood with a sword, so he used a club. Others think the club was a sign of command.
In 1885, 35 women from the Leek Embroidery Society in England began making a full-size copy. They finished it in 1886. It is now in Reading Museum. Funny detail: they added underwear to some figures who had none in the original!
