Inside a golden frame, Christ sits on a throne holding a book. Peacocks stand beside his head, and knots and spirals fill every space. This is one page (folio 32 verso) of the Book of Kells. Around 800, monks copied the four Gospels, the stories of Christ's life, in Latin by hand and decorated them.
No one knows for sure where the book was made. It has long been linked to the monastery founded by St Columba on the island of Iona in Scotland, but some experts suggest Ireland or Pictland in eastern Scotland. After repeated Viking raids, the Iona monks set up a new center at Kells in Ireland. The pages are vellum, thin calfskin.
Irish chronicles record that in 1007 'the great Gospel of Columba' was stolen from the church at Kells. Months later it was found buried in the ground, with its gold cover torn off. This is thought to have been the Book of Kells. The book came to Trinity College Dublin in the 17th century. Today crowds of visitors come to see it in its glass case.

Since ancient times, people believed peacock meat did not rot, so peacocks became a sign of eternal life. The theologian Augustine, writing around AD 400, said that peacock meat had not gone bad even after a year.
The most famous page in the book, the Chi-Rho page with the first letters of Christ's name, comes just after this one. Hidden in its dense patterns, there are even cats and mice. They may have a religious meaning, or they may simply be playful.
Today 340 leaves, or 680 pages, survive. It is said that the whole book needed the skins of about 185 calves. In 1953, it was rebound in four volumes.
