This is a page from an old book. Monks wrote and painted it by hand about 1,200 years ago. Christ sits in the middle. Two peacocks are near his head. People think thieves stole this book long ago!
Inside a golden frame, Christ sits on a throne holding a book. Peacocks stand beside his head, and knots and spirals fill every space. This is one page (folio 32 verso) of the Book of Kells. Around 800, monks copied the four Gospels, the stories of Christ's life, in Latin by hand and decorated them.

盗まれて、土の中から発見！ 1007年、ケルズの教会から大切な福音書が盗まれ、数か月後に土の下から見つかったと年代記にあります。宝石や金でかざられていたと思われる表紙は、なくなっていました。これがケルズの書のことだと考えられています。
