パリに生まれ、古代ギリシャ・ローマのようなきびしく力強い絵「新古典主義」を代表する画家になりました。『ホラティウス兄弟の誓い』で名をあげ、フランス革命では政治家としても活動します。その後はナポレオンの首席画家となり、『アルプス越えのナポレオン』や戴冠式の大作を描きました。ナポレオンの没落後はブリュッセルに亡命し、そこで亡くなりました。
David was born in Paris and became the leader of Neoclassicism, a strong, serious style inspired by ancient Greece and Rome. The Oath of the Horatii made him famous. During the French Revolution, he was also a politician. Later, he became Napoleon's First Painter and painted Napoleon Crossing the Alps and the huge Coronation. After Napoleon fell, David went into exile in Brussels, where he died.
