この作品のお話
Story1804年12月2日、パリのノートルダム大聖堂で、ナポレオンの皇帝即位の式がおこなわれました。ダヴィッドが描いたのは、自分で冠をかぶったナポレオンが、ひざまずく妻ジョゼフィーヌに皇后の冠をさずける場面です。うしろにはローマ教皇ピウス7世が座っています。
On 2 December 1804, Napoleon was crowned emperor in Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. David painted the moment when Napoleon, already wearing his crown, places a crown on his kneeling wife, Josephine. Behind him sits Pope Pius VII.
ダヴィッドは「皇帝の首席画家」として式に出席し、スケッチを重ねました。幅およそ10mの画面に、皇帝の家族、大臣、聖職者、外国の大使まで、たくさんの実在の人物を描き分けています。完成した絵を見たナポレオンは大いに喜び、感謝したと伝えられます。
As the emperor's First Painter, David attended the ceremony and made many sketches. On a canvas almost 10 metres wide, he painted a crowd of real people: the imperial family, ministers, priests and even foreign ambassadors. When Napoleon saw the finished painting, he was delighted and thanked David.
絵は1808年のサロンで公開され、のちにヴェルサイユ宮殿に置かれたあと、1889年にルーヴルへ移りました。今はルーヴルの大きな部屋で、ダヴィッドのほかの大作とならんでいます。2023年の映画『ナポレオン』では、この絵とそっくりの戴冠式の場面が再現されました。
It was shown at the Salon of 1808. Later it hung at Versailles and moved to the Louvre in 1889. Today it hangs in a large gallery of the Louvre with other huge works by David. The 2023 film Napoleon recreated the coronation scene to look just like this painting.

Secrets中央の観覧席に座るナポレオンの母レティツィアは、実は式に出席していません。息子たちの仲たがいに抗議していたためといわれます。それでもダヴィッドは、目立つ場所に彼女を描きこみました。
Napoleon's mother, Letizia, sits in the center of the box. In fact, she did not attend. She was reportedly upset about quarrels among her sons. Still, David painted her in a place of honour.
ダヴィッドの下絵では、ナポレオンが自分の頭に冠をのせる姿でした。完成作ではジョゼフィーヌに冠をさずける場面に変更。今も最初のポーズのあとがうっすら見えるといわれます。
In David's sketch, Napoleon was putting the crown on his own head. In the final painting, he crowns Josephine instead. Faint traces of the first pose can still be seen.
ナポレオンは構図の細かいところまで口を出しました。教皇ピウス7世は、はじめはひざに手を置いていましたが、祝福のために手を上げる姿に描き直されたといいます。教皇も「ただ座っている客」ではなくなったのです。
Napoleon closely checked the design. Pope Pius VII was first shown with his hands on his knees, but he was changed to raise his hand in a blessing. So the Pope no longer just sits like a guest.
1808年、アメリカの商人たちが同じ大きさの複製を注文しました。ダヴィッドは亡命先のブリュッセルで、記憶をたよりに1822年に完成させます。いちばん目立つちがいは、妹のひとりのドレスが白からピンクになったところです。今はヴェルサイユ宮殿にあります。
In 1808, American businessmen ordered a full-size copy. David finished it in 1822 in Brussels, where he lived in exile, painting from memory. The most noticeable change is that one of Napoleon's sisters wears a pink dress instead of a white one. It is now at Versailles.

In the center box is Napoleon's mother. In real life, she did not come to the ceremony.
