Like a god!? The emperor, face-on, by 25-year-old Ingres.
Napoleon, now emperor, sits facing us on a golden throne. He wears a Roman-style laurel wreath, a white ermine collar, and holds two symbols of royal power: the sceptre of Charles V and the Hand of Justice. He has every symbol of royal power. The painter was Ingres, who later became one of France's greatest artists. He was only about 25 at the time.
Art historians often compare the stiff, front-facing pose to the giant ancient statue of Zeus and to images of God the Father in medieval altarpieces. The folds of cloth and the golden details are painted so finely that you want a magnifying glass. He wanted the emperor to look less like a man and more like a god.
At the Salon of 1806, critics attacked it as 'Gothic', old-fashioned and strangely coloured. Even David, Ingres's teacher, judged it harshly. It was moved to the Invalides in 1832 but stayed in storage for many years. Since the early 20th century, it has been shown in the Army Museum there. Napoleon's own tomb is in the same building.
Napoleon sits on a gold throne. He looks at us. He wears red, white and gold. He looks like a god, not a man. Look at the carpet. A small picture by Raphael is hiding there!
The scholar Robert Rosenblum pointed out that the pose looks like God the Father in the van Eyck brothers' Ghent Altarpiece. At that time, the altarpiece had been taken to the Louvre in Paris as a prize of war.
Along the left edge of the carpet are round designs with signs of the zodiac. One of them shows Raphael's Madonna della Seggiola. Raphael was the painter Ingres admired most.
When the critics attacked the painting, Ingres had just left to study in Rome. He was deeply hurt and stayed in Italy for about 18 years. Paris finally praised him in 1824.
No one knows who ordered this portrait. In August 1806, the Corps législatif, the French parliament, bought it for its president's reception room. The arms of the Kingdom of Italy in the background suggest it may first have been meant for Italy.
