Twelve years to finish! A grand portrait by a painter who first said no to the job.
A woman in a flowered dress sits comfortably on a pink sofa. She touches her cheek with her fingertips and looks at us. In the mirror behind her, we see her face from the side. The model is Inès Moitessier, the wife of a wealthy businessman. The great French painter Ingres finished this portrait in 1856. It is now in the National Gallery in London.
When Ingres was asked to paint this portrait in 1844, he refused at first, because he thought portraits were less important than history paintings. But it is said that when he met her, he was struck by her beauty and agreed. The work went slowly, and it took twelve years to finish. In the meantime, he also painted a standing portrait of her (1851, National Gallery of Art, Washington).
When it was finished, Ingres was in his mid-seventies. On the frame of the mirror at the right, he wrote "J. INGRES 1856 AET LXXVI", meaning "aged 76". Every detail is painted smoothly, from the flowers on the dress to the jewels and the sofa fabric. Later, Picasso was fascinated by this painting. In 1932 he painted "Woman with a Book", which uses a similar hand-to-cheek pose.

In the first plan, her young daughter Catherine was going to be painted next to her. But Ingres apparently found the girl impossible to work with, and he removed her from the picture around 1847. In the finished painting, the lady sits alone.
The pose with her fingertips on her cheek is said to come from a figure in "Hercules and Telephus", a wall painting found in the ancient town of Herculaneum. Ingres knew it from prints. He gave a rich 19th-century lady the pose of an ancient goddess.
Her maiden name was de Foucauld. Her brother's son was Charles de Foucauld, who later lived a life of prayer in the Sahara Desert. As a young man, he was warmly welcomed by his aunt's family. In 2022, the Catholic Church declared him a saint.
She faces almost straight toward us, yet the mirror behind her shows a clear side view. A real mirror would hardly reflect her like that. Ingres probably chose this unreal reflection on purpose, to show her beauty from the front and from the side in one picture.
