この作品のお話
Story青いサテンのドレスを着た若い女性が、金色のいすに腕をのせて、静かにこちらを見ています。背景には、ゆったりしたソファと、うっすら紋章のある壁。フランスの名門貴族ブロイ家に嫁いだポーリーヌの肖像で、アングルが1851〜53年に描きました。今はニューヨークのメトロポリタン美術館にあります。
A young woman in a blue satin dress rests her arms on a golden chair and looks at us calmly. Behind her are a sofa and a wall with a faint coat of arms. She is Pauline, who married into the great noble Broglie family of France. Ingres painted her portrait in 1851–1853. It is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
アングルは70歳をこえても、肖像画の名手として上流階級の注文を受けていました。この絵でも、つやつや光るサテン、すけるレース、真珠や金のアクセサリーを、筆あとが見えないほどなめらかに描いています。右上には紋章が描かれ、二つの名家の結びつきを示しています。
Even after the age of 70, Ingres was still a top portrait painter for rich and noble families. In this picture, he painted shiny satin, see-through lace, pearls and gold so smoothly that you cannot see his brushstrokes. A coat of arms at the top right shows the union of two noble families.
ポーリーヌは1845年にアルベール・ド・ブロイと結婚しました。内気で信心深い女性だったといわれます。この絵の完成から7年後の1860年、彼女は35歳の若さで病気のため亡くなりました。絵はのちにアメリカのコレクター、ロバート・レーマンの手に渡り、1975年にメトロポリタン美術館のものになりました。
Pauline married Albert de Broglie in 1845. She is said to have been shy and very religious. In 1860, seven years after the portrait was finished, she died of illness at only 35. Later, the American collector Robert Lehman bought the painting, and it came to the Metropolitan Museum in 1975.

Ingres was born in 1780, so he was in his early seventies when he painted this. Even so, he painted every hair, every lace pattern and every pearl on her bracelet in amazing detail.
ポーリーヌの夫アルベール・ド・ブロイは、のちに政治家となり、1870年代にフランスの首相をつとめました。ポーリーヌはそれを見ることなく、若くして亡くなっています。
Pauline's husband, Albert de Broglie, later became a politician and served as Prime Minister of France in the 1870s. Sadly, Pauline died young and never saw this.
右上のかべに描かれた紋章は、夫のブロイ家と、ポーリーヌの実家の紋章を組み合わせたもの。結婚によって結ばれた二つの名家を、さりげなく、でも誇らしげに示しています。
The coat of arms on the wall at the top right combines the arms of her husband's Broglie family and her own family. It quietly shows how two noble families were joined by marriage.
この絵を持っていた銀行家ロバート・レーマンのコレクションは、まとめてメトロポリタン美術館に寄贈されました。美術館はそのために「ロバート・レーマン・ウィング」という専用の展示棟を作りました。
This painting belonged to the banker Robert Lehman. His whole collection was given to the Metropolitan Museum, and the museum built a special space for it, the Robert Lehman Wing.
