A goblin on a sleeper, a horse through the curtain: a nightmare made visible.
A woman in white sleeps, almost sliding off her bed. On her chest sits a squat little goblin, glaring at us. Through a gap in the curtain on the left, a horse with glowing white eyes pushes in its head. Henry Fuseli, a Swiss-born painter who worked in London, painted a bad dream itself.
In old Europe, people believed that evil spirits sat on the chests of sleepers and gave them bad dreams. Fuseli put the dream and the real bedroom together in one picture. There is a dark background, a brightly lit woman and strange creatures. It was very new to paint not a story or history, but what happens inside the mind.
When it was shown at the Royal Academy in 1782, it caused a sensation and became Fuseli's first big success. Prints of it spread widely, and political cartoonists made many parodies. Scholars also see links with a scene in Frankenstein and with stories by Edgar Allan Poe. Fuseli later painted the subject again in several different versions.
A woman is sleeping on a bed. A small monster sits on her. A horse looks in from the curtain. She is having a nightmare. The horse is a joke on the word 'nightmare'!

On the back of this canvas is an unfinished portrait of a young woman. She may be Anna Landolt, a woman Fuseli loved in Zurich. The art historian H. W. Janson even suggested that the sleeper is Anna and the goblin is Fuseli himself.
The painting sold for twenty guineas. But the publisher who sold prints of it earned more than 500 pounds. The hit made more money for the print seller than for the painter.
In the 1920s, a print of this painting hung in Sigmund Freud's apartment in Vienna. However, Freud is not known to have written about the picture himself.
In English, a 'mare' is a female horse, but the 'mare' in nightmare comes from an old word for an evil spirit that sits on sleepers. An early sketch has no horse, so the horse was probably added later as a visual pun.
