He falls asleep, and owls and bats fly out of the dark! Goya's dream print.
A man sleeps with his head on a desk. Owls and bats crowd around him, and a big lynx at his feet stares at us. This is No. 43 of 'Los Caprichos', a set of 80 prints that Goya published in 1799. This image shows a first-edition copy in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in the USA.
'Los Caprichos' makes fun of superstitions, foolish customs and powerful people who behave badly. Goya used etching, where acid cuts lines into a copper plate. He combined it with aquatint, which makes soft gray tones with tiny grains. On the side of the desk are the words 'The sleep of reason produces monsters'.
Sales of the prints stopped soon after they went on sale. In 1803, Goya gave the copper plates and unsold copies to the king. Some say he was afraid of the Inquisition, the church's strict court. Still, this print became an early image of the dark side of the mind and imagination. It inspired many later artists and writers.
A man is sleeping at his desk. Owls and bats fly around him. A big cat looks at us. Goya made this print in 1799. The words say: when reason sleeps, monsters come.

In Spanish, 'sueño' means both 'sleep' and 'dream'. So the title can mean 'When reason sleeps, monsters are born' or 'The dream of reason produces monsters'. That is why English has two translations, with 'sleep' or 'dream'.
At the far left, one owl holds out a crayon holder, a tool for drawing, to the sleeping man. It seems to say, 'Wake up and draw!' Some people think the sleeping man is Goya himself.
An explanation by Goya survives. It says that imagination without reason creates impossible monsters, but imagination united with reason is the mother of the arts. So he did not say imagination was bad.
At first, this image is said to have been planned as the opening picture of the set. In the end, Goya's self-portrait in profile became No. 1, and this print was placed near the middle of the set, as No. 43.
