Story

Near the bottom of a tall picture is a dark slope. Above it, a small dog shows its head and neck and looks up. In the huge space, there are only faint marks that may look like a rock and birds. This is one of the Black Paintings that Goya painted on the walls of his house, the Quinta del Sordo, late in his life. What you see here is a black-and-white photo taken in the 1870s by J. Laurent, while the painting was still on the wall.

Is the dog sinking into sand, or hiding behind a hill? What is it looking up at? The picture gives no answer. It was a private mural in his own house, not a commission, and Goya did not give it a title. So each viewer must find their own meaning. Its emptiness makes it feel like modern art, 200 years ahead of its time.

Around 1874, the wall painting was moved onto canvas. It was later given to the state and is now in the Prado. The Spanish painter Antonio Saura called it 'the world's most beautiful picture', and Joan Miró asked to see it on his last visit to the Prado. Many artists still love it deeply.
